The first residents of this beautiful location were the peaceful tribe of Quinnipiac, being drawn in by the Blue Hills Sleeping Giant Mountain. In 1638, William Christopher Reilly and the Reverend John Davenport purchased Hamden from the Native American tribe, where it was settled as part of New Haven until 1786. Approximately 1,400 residents decided to incorporate the town, and named it after John Hampden, the English statesmen. Hamden then become known for its industrialization, with its introduction to the modern era of mass production and interchangeable parts concepts. It was at this industrial site that arms for the U.S. Government were produced and a waterfall provided power.
