Approximately 1,400 residents decided to incorporate the town, and named it after John Hampden, the English statesmen. Hamden then become known for its industrialization, with its introduction to the modern era of mass production and interchangeable parts concepts. It was at this industrial site that arms for the U.S. Government were produced and a waterfall provided power.
